If Northern are known for their strict steps of cooking and sophisticated dining experience, and Southern’s simplicity with a twist is a signature, the Central embraces elegance with a touch of familiarity. Located in the difficult Central region where harsh actions of mother nature occur so often, the creativity and resilience of the people here has been cherishing every value from the most common simplicity. From that value, all the street food items have been born, including the salted yogurt.
A memory indented in the minds of the Danang children, the salted yogurt is filled in a small plastic or glass jar, with sweetness and refreshing coolness serving with a whole new sense from the salt added in on every bite.
The making of these delightful refreshments is relatively simple. The main ingredients include condensed milk, yogurt, boiling water, all mixed together in the appropriate proportion and then divided into small jars, left overnight where the jars are stored in the freezer for about 2 to 3 hours before serving.
Traveling to Da Nang, visitors will be surprised at a small hamlet selling salt yogurt. Right at the corner of Bui Thi Xuan street intersecting with Phan Huy Chu (Son Tra district), you will see a long line along the road where all shops sell salted yogurt. In particular, all of these shops are identical, from the arrangement of tables and chairs, food cabinets to snack menus.
About a decade ago, this place only had one shop selling salted yogurt. However, seeing that the customers were getting more and more crowded, the owner shared the recipe with the people around, so that they could make it together for fun. Gradually, this place quickly became the famous salt yogurt village in Da Thanh land. Yogurt is put in a jar, each jar costs 1,000 VND, cheap but extremely tasteful. For each jar of yogurt, the owner comes with a small cup of fine salt. The sweetness of yogurt mixed with the salty taste of salt is surprisingly suitable for a summer day.
